Pulsar
Short Film
Little Northern Light
Dir. Aurora Fearnley
Written and Directed by Aurora Fearnley, and starring David Gyasi (Interstellar, Annihilation), the ambitious sci-fi short Pulsar was the winning entry of The Pitch at Pinewood Studios in 2013.
Pulsar is a modern interpretation of the biblical story of Jonah and the whale, following an intergalactic peacemaker (Gyasi), who rejects his final mission to save an endangered planet, and is believed to be cursed when a solar storm hits the spaceship he is travelling on.
I met with Aurora in December 2014, to discuss her film and her ideas, and I enjoyed drawing up the boards for the film. At the time there wasn't any reference material such as ship or set designs to work from, so the way they appear in the boards differs greatly from the final film. I don't believe there was a shot-list at that stage either, so the boards came out of the discussion with the Director.
Although I could see the film in my head, I tried to temper the appearance of the visuals, such as the sets and vehicle designs, etc. Not so much that they appeared empty and bland, but so that they were not too heavily 'bespoke', that way the boards would still be effective and clear, even after the sets, etc were fully designed and built later on in production.
